Capel Manor College

Spring into action at Capel Manor College in 2015

During the dark days of winter, a career in the great outdoors may be furthest from your mind. But if you ask the students at Capel Manor College (and we have) what a difference learning and working outside has made to their lives, you will think again. 97% of the College’s students who completed an Ofsted learner survey would recommend a course at Capel Manor to a friend.

College Principal Dr Steve Dowbiggin, says: “Our staff work hard to create a safe and supportive environment where students can achieve their full potential. I am delighted that an entirely independent source has recognised what a special experience we offer.”

Hands-on approach

Capel Manor is a unique land-based College with centres across Greater London at Enfield, Crystal Palace Park, Gunnersbury Park, Regent’s Park and Newham. The College offers a range of full and part-time courses and Apprenticeships leading to nationally recognised qualifications equivalent to GCSEs and A Levels, for employment or access to Higher Education, as well as professional courses.

Courses include animal care, horticulture, saddlery, landscaping, garden design, arboriculture, forestry and floristry. Training focuses on practical hands-on skills, ensuring students gain invaluable experience in real situations. Tutors and instructors are experts in their respective subject areas with strong industry knowledge - Britain’s ‘green’ industries are growing and there is a demand for skilled and qualified employees.

Whilst studying, students help to run the College’s estates, gardens, farm and floristry outlet. So whatever your age, one of five of Capel Manor College’s centres across London will offer you a safe, friendly and inspirational environment to study.

Capel Manor College has Beacon status, holds Matrix accreditation for the quality of student guidance and at its last Ofsted inspection in 2013 was assessed as a Good provider with excellent features and a clear line of sight to become Outstanding.

The College Mission Statement is to help you ‘Grow your potential in the natural world’ - we believe Capel Manor College can help you change your life for the better in 2015.

Earn while you learn

Ben Dispirito, 20, gained Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas in Horticulture and a Royal Horticultural Society Level 2 Certificate, and maintained both Bushey and Richmond Royal Parks, over a three-year period as part of his Horticulture Apprenticeship at Capel Manor College. As a result, he has won one of only 12 places available on the prestigious Kew Diploma, which will see him train for the equivalent of an undergraduate degree at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

“I couldnʼt see myself going on to university so there didnʼt seem much point in staying on at

school to do A Levels, although I did want to stay on in some form of education and training as I wasnʼt ready for full-time work,” said Ben. “Iʼm not hugely academic, so being hands-on is what I prefer and working in horticulture keeps you fit and active. With the Apprenticeship, there is a good balance of theory along with learning the practical skills and putting these into practice at work. After this, Iʼm considering pursuing a career in garden design“.

Inspiring tomorrow’s garden design stars

“Capel Manor is full of inspiration, and finding out how well its students do at shows and competitions sold the course to me. I knew that that was what I wanted to do one day." So says Sarah Jarman, RHS Chelsea Flower Show Fresh Talent winner and recipient of an honours award from the Worshipful Company of Gardeners. Miss Jarman is currently in the second year of her Level 3 Diploma in Garden Design at the College and has set up her own garden design company.

Supporting you throughout your course and beyond

The College knows that happy, well-supported students achieve the greatest success and Capel Manor offers a wide range of services to all its students. Personal tutors offer advice and support with your studies, counselling and pastoral help is available if you experience personal or academic problems, and tailored support is on hand for those with disabilities or learning difficulties.

Many College students volunteer to become part of Team Capel, enriching both their experience of studying and the College itself, through working in the gardens, at the farm, with the animals or in the administration and support services.
